Monday Night Preview

On Monday the night the Jets game against the Patriots has the chance to be the game that not only decides the AFC East champion but also who gets home field advantage throughout the playoffs. At 9-2 the Jets and Patriots have set themselves apart from the rest of the AFC along with every team in the NFC besides the Falcons. If the Jets win this game it puts them well on their way to ensuring that in back to back seasons the AFC Championship and then the Super Bowl will be played at the New Meadowlands stadium. A win in this game will give them the leeway of being able to lose one more game throughout the remaining 4 games and still win the division. This is very important because the Jets have the toughest remaining schedule of any team that is still in playoff contention, with games coming up against the Dolphins, Steelers and Bears. However walking into Gillette stadium and winning is no easy task and the Jets should know better than anyone since they were the last team to do it in the regular season back in 2006. I however am pretty confident that the Jets will be able to finally beat the Patriots on the road again as long as they accomplish a few key goals.
First and foremost I think the most important key to victory is the Jets ability to stop the Patriots two young tight ends. I am completely confident that Revis who I am guessing will be on Wes Welker will be able to shut him down and I have faith that Antonio Cromartie will also be able to shut down Deion Branch if he is in fact assigned to cover him. However it is Gronkowski and Hernandez who worry me the most about the Pats offense. All year long the Jets have had trouble shutting down tight ends and the fact that the Patriots have those two weapons at tight end along with the aging Alge Crumpler could potentially be a huge problem. The solution may be that Cromartie because of his speed and large frame will have to cover one of the tight ends. However if not that, then whatever scheme Rex Ryan draws up better be able to stop the Pats Tight ends or it might be a long night.
Secondly, the Jets need to hit Brady and hit him often. When the Jets beat the Pats back in week two they had Brady playing scared. There were countless occasions that Brady ended up throwing short of his intended receiver because it seemed like he was too scared of the Jets ferocious pass rush to fully step into his throws. The Jets forced Brady into throwing two interceptions and the one sack that they were able to get was a strip sack by Jason Taylor. Even though they only got one sack on Brady they had pass rushers in his face all day long. That is something that hopefully will continue when they meet again on Monday night. The Jets Pass rush seemed to go on vacation for a few weeks before making a big return in the second half of Thursday’s game against the Bengals. Hopefully Rex has the pass rush back to stay this time and they can once again strike fear into Brady.
The third and last key that I have to a Jets victory is that the Sanchize needs to relax and be the clutch quarterback that he has proved himself to be. Last year Sanchez had maybe his worst game as a Pro in Gillette stadium against the Pats. However the Sanchez of last year and the quarterback we see before our eyes week in and week out are two completely different players. Not only is he making smarter decisions but he is also making clutch plays and leading last minute game winning drives that probably made even the “great” Tom Brady jealous. Sanchez potentially has more weapons at his disposal than any other them in the NFL and that should allow him to pick apart the Patriots awful and young pass defense. As long as Sanchez plays smart football and keeps his cool, I see no reason why the Jets won’t walk out of Gillette with sole possession of the best record in the AFC.
Either way you look at it Monday night’s game is the biggest of the regular season so far and will probably end up being the biggest game all season. It is very rare that two division rivals face each other this late in the season with the NFL’s best record on the line. If the Jets are able to accomplish these three goals I see absolutely no reason why Jets nation won’t be celebrating come Midnight on Monday. So Jet fans let’s look forward to seeing Brady get crushed from his blind side both early and often.
