On Tuesday morning, my brother woke me up by kicking me and telling me that the Jets had signed TO. All I could say was no they didn't, no they didn't, no they didn't, there is no way they signed TO. He finally broke the news to me that although they hadn't signed TO, that it was all over the news that Mikey T had placed a call into TO's agent.
I immediately turned on my lap top and started reading all the articles I could find about the TO to the Jets rumors. I finally came to the conclusion that, that’s exactly what they were, rumors. I knew that Tannenbaum had made the call, but a few months ago he also placed a call to the agent of Jamarcus Russell and I mean we all knew that wasn't ever going to happen.
Some people claiming that they are looking only at the cold hard facts, might declare signing TO a good move for the Jets. I didn't hear it myself, but I was told that one of my favorite radio talk show host's, Mike Golic was one of these people. I cannot and will not attempt to say that TO isn't one of the best receivers of all time. I have always supported him all the way back to his days in San Fran. I would have loved for the Jets to have signed him 3 or 4 years ago, BUT TO is washed up. Not washed up in the sense that he can longer perform at a high level, which I don't doubt that he will for the Bengals. But washed up in the sense that his skills no longer out way the cancer that he would be to the Jets locker room. There is also one other huge reason why I didn't want TO to be wearing Green next year. That the Jets DON'T need him.
Gang Green already has one of if not the most talented receiving cores in football. Santonio Holmes once he’s back from suspension and Braylon Edwards will take care of every need the Jets have for a deep threat. As for the receiver that TO would be potentially pushing out of the picture, Jerricho Cotchery. He is the reason why I have no worries about the Jets receivers being able to gel and create a cohesive unit. He is now a veteran on this team and a leader, he has already been through some good times and some tough times with the Jets. Let alone the fact the he has the skills to be a #1 receiver, but he just never had the support.
Now Cotchery is being put in the absolute perfect position to utilize his skill set. I want Jet fans to think back to when we had a young Cotchery as a #2 receiver to Laveranues Coles. Do you remember all those electrifying plays that Cotchery made? I can think back to one game in particular, I think it was against the Patriots when he made 2 amazing plays to turn nothing into something. One of those was when he made an acrobatic catch and somehow managed to keep his knee from hitting the ground and then got back up and ran it in for a touchdown. That is the kind of player that Cotchery is, a quick, shifty and fast receiver who runs great routes and makes big plays after the catch. AKA the prototypical slot receiver.
That is why we don’t need TO, because we already have 2 proven deep threats in Holmes and Edwards and because we have one of the best slot receivers in the game as our #3 guy. A Player that very easily could be the #1 guy for many teams in the NFL and as long as a year ago was the #1 receiver for your New York Jets. So thank you football gods and thank you Bengals for ending all this TO to the Jets talk after one long day.
